DERRY and Tyrone have named their teams for Saturday's McKenna Cup (7pm). Magherafelt's Michael McEvoy is poised to become the 31st player used by Damian Barton in this season’s McKenna Cup.
The UUJ student was on Derry’s Ulster minor winning team of 2015 and has been listed at midfield for a senior debut in Saturday’s Final against Tyrone.
Niall Loughlin, Neil Forester, Ballinderry duo Oisin Duffin and Ryan Bell are the only four players to have started all games in 2017, as Derry continue to experiment.
Craigbane’s Aidey McLaughlin picked up a recurrence of an old shoulder injury after Monaghan’s Kieran Hughes brushed him off in the first half of the semi-final. The extent of the damage is 'not diagnosed’ but McLaughlin, who impressed since his return to the fold, looks set for a spell on the sidelines.
Carlus McWilliams was withdrawn 17 minutes into the Monaghan game with a hamstring scare, but is named among the subs. Peter Hagan is selected at wing forward but injury kept him out of action last weekend.
Tyrone are in their eighth successive final, gunning for six-in-a-row McKenna Cup title. Derry have to go back to 2011 for their last success - a win over Tyrone. The teams met in last season’s enthralling final, with Derry throwing victory away in the closing stages, before going down after extra time.
“I would say we had two hands on it last year, somebody took the other hand off,” commented Enda Lynn after last weekend’s game.
The counties will meet in the opening round of the Ulster championship on Sunday May 28.
