SDLP representatives met with Northside Shopping Centre management on Wednesday to discuss the future of the centre.
It follows an announcement that the SuperValu store and Post Office may close.
Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan and Ballyarnett councillors Brian Tierney and Rory Farrell attended the meeting.
Cllr Brian Tierney said: “People in this community have been left reeling by the news that SuperValu and the adjacent Post Office may close. These are vital local services, which is why the SDLP met with Northside representatives to discuss efforts to avert the closures, support existing businesses and secure the future of the centre.
“It was important to establish that the long-term future of the centre itself is not under threat. There was a clear acknowledgement that regeneration work is needed, and we offered the SDLP’s full support to help drive that forward. We are also doing everything possible to protect staff jobs and keep these key services in place, with work already well underway in that regard.
“I would strongly encourage people to continue supporting SuperValu, the Post Office and all businesses in Northside during this period. Maintaining footfall is crucial to ensuring other traders are not unfairly impacted while discussions continue.
“The SDLP will keep working with centre management and all relevant parties in the weeks ahead to find a positive solution that protects services for people in Galliagh, Shantallow, Carnhill and the wider area.”
