A County Derry man who sadly passed away following a two-vehicle collision on the Glenshane Road earlier this morning has been named as 30-year-old Conor Devine from Park.
Conor died following a two-vehicle road traffic collision on Glenshane Road, between Dungiven and Maghera this morning (Monday, August 9) just after 5.00am.
"The collision was reported to us at 5:20am," said PSNI Inspector Colin Shaw.
"Conor was the driver of the silver-coloured Volvo car that was involved in the collision with a tanker lorry. Emergency services attended the scene where Conor was pronounced dead.
"The driver of the tanker lorry was taken to hospital for treatment of what are believed to be not serious injuries.
"Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have captured it on their dash cam or who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police, is asked to call officers on 101, quoting reference 233 of 09/08/21."
Causeway Coast and Glens councillor for Benbradagh, Kathleen McGurk, said the rural village of Park would be ‘deeply saddened’.
“I offer my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Conor Devine who has sadly lost his life on our roads this morning,” she said.
”This tragedy has shocked the local community of Park. As a small rural village, it will be deeply saddened to lose a young man like Conor however I have no doubt the community will support his family as they grieve for their loss.”
Local MLAs have expressed their condolences to Conor's family.
"I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Conor Devine who tragically died in the accident on the Glenshane this morning," said Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald.
The SDLP's Cara Hunter said Conor's death was a 'huge tragedy'.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Conor Devine from Park, who tragically lost his life this morning on the Glenshane Pass," she said.
"This is a huge tragedy for the family and friends, and the whole community."
Craigbane GAC, where Conor’s brother Odhrán is an underage player, also offered their sympathy.
”Craigbane GAC wish to extend sincere sympathy to the family of Conor Devine on his tragic passing. Conor is the brother of our underage player Odhran. May he rest in peace,” they said.
The Glenshane Road has now reopened to traffic after the incident.
