Lanterns are to be released in Derry at the exact time of the death of Bobby Sands, the first of the ten republican hunger strikers to die in Long Kesh prison in 1981. The 27-year-old IRA man (pictured) died on 5 May, after 66 days on hunger strike. The 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM) is to hold a candlelit vigil to mark the 34th anniversary of his death, beginning at Free Derry Corner at 12.30am on Tuesday, 5 May next. The vigil will culminate with the release of a number of lanterns at 1.17am, the exact time of his death. A 32CSM spokesperson said: “We would like to invite anyone wishing to join us to meet at Free Derry Corner.”
