The death has taken place of James Moore, the owner of the Rising Sun Bar in Greysteel where one of the worst atrocities of the North’s “Troubles” was carried out almost 22 years ago. UFF gunmen burst into the Co Derry pub and shot dead seven people on the eve of Halloween 1993. Eight people were wounded, one of whom died six months later from his injuries. Before opening fire, one of the gunmen shouted "trick or treat." Mr Moore’s father, also named James (82), was one of those killed. The youngest victim was 19-year-old Karen Thompson who died alongside her boyfriend, Stephen Mullan (20). Also shot dead on the night were Joseph McDermott (60), Moira Duddy (59), John Moyne (50) and John Burns (54). Samuel Montgomery (76) died the following April after blood clots from a leg wound spread to his lungs. A memorial (pictured), dedicated to those killed, is located close to the bar. Four loyalists - Jeffrey Deeney (23), Stephen Irwin(24), Brian McNeill (26) - all from Derry - and Torrens Knight (24), from Macosquin in Co Derry, were jailed for life for carrying out the attack. They have all since been released. The UFF claimed it out the attack in revenge for the IRA bombing of Frizzell’s chip shop on Belfast’s Shankill Road the previous week which claimed the lives of nine innocent people. One of the bombers, Thomas Begley, was also killed. Mr Moore’s remains will be taken from his home at Killylane Road, Greysteel, at 10.30am tomorrow for Requiem Mass in Star of the Sea Church, Faughanvale. He will be laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. He is survived by his wife Rose, son James and daughter Sharon, grandchildren and brothers Colm, Desmond, Loreen and Eamon.
