People Before Profit are hosting an event to look at how abortion rights can be gained in both North and Southern Ireland in Derry this week. The event entitled 'The Fight For Abortion Rights in Ireland: North and South' will take place at The Playhouse on Thursday from 7-9pm. Guest speakers will be pro-choice campaigners Goretti Horgan and Emma Hendrick. A People Before Profit spokesperson said: "This week has shown that determined and consistent campaigning can make a huge difference in the fight for equality on the island of Ireland. "On Thursday, the report of the Citizen’s Assembly was published, recommending the repeal of the 8th amendment and legislation to provide for abortion on request to 12 weeks and for a range of reasons after that. "The same day saw the Tory/DUP government agree to fund NHS abortions in England for women from the North rather than risk defeat in a vote for a Labour Party amendment. "This is a huge victory for the pro-choice movement, although it is only a start – we need to look after women’s health here, not send them to England."Despite abortion, like LGBTQ rights, being a huge equality issue North and South of the border, none of the main Assembly parties support equality for women when it comes to control over their bodies and their lives."People Before Profit fights for a woman’s right to choose, for abortion to be available free as health care and not be part of the criminal law and we fight for the housing, jobs, childcare and benefits that allow women to choose to continue an unplanned pregnancy. "Come to the meeting and join in the discussion about how we can win abortion rights on both sides of the border. All welcome."
