Popular Derry restaurant to close due to rising costs

Pyke ‘N’ Pommes, the award-winning pioneer of Derry’s street-food scene, has announced a strategic restructuring of its operations.

The business will consolidate its efforts into its original Quayside location while closing its licensed restaurant on Strand Road at the end of January.

After years of serving as a staple of the city’s dining scene, the Pyke ‘N’ Pommes restaurant at Strand Road will officially close its doors on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Rising costs have led to the ‘difficult decision’ to close the restaurant the Derry business said, as it made the announcement on the Pyke ‘N’ Pommes Instagram page.

While the Strand Road premises will close, the brand’s heart remains at the Derry riverfront. Its popular, original Pod outlet will expand its operations to seven days a week.

Pyke ‘N’ Pommes posted: “Dear friends of PNPs 53-55 Strand Rd. After many unforgettable years of sharing burgers, tacos, beer, wine and memories with you, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the doors on 53-55 Strand Rd.

"PNPs will serve its last meal Saturday, January 31.

“It’s been extremely difficult over the past few years with ever increasing food costs, wage and National Insurance increases, constantly rising energy costs! I could go on and on.

“The reality is the business is not sustainable anymore.”

Pyke ‘N’ Pommes said the decision “hasn’t come easy” and paid tribute to its legions of loyal customers. “PNPs has been more than just a restaurant, it’s been a place where community gathered, friendships were made and countless celebrations were shared over good food wine and beer.

"To everyone who supported us, dined with us and made PNPs feel like home thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your loyalty and love have meant everything to us.

“I hope you’ll all drop by for one last burger and a toast of beer or wine. Peace and love always PNPs.”

Following the announcement, Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan said: "Sad news that another local business has been forced to close its doors.

"Pyke'n'Pommes was well established on the Strand Road ,where so many of us have enjoyed delicious food and great times with our families and friends.

"The team over the years has been brilliant and I wish them all well. But all is not lost - the pod on the riverfront will still be open so you can still your hands on and mouths around Pyke'n'Pommes 'Legenderry Burgers.

"The cost of doing business has become colossal and it's making it so difficult for business owners to stay open and keep people in jobs.

"The Executive, that prides itself for how it supported businesses during Covid, has turned its back on them now.
This can't go on."

Several other popular restaurants and other businesses across the north west have also been forced to close premises over recent years due to rising costs.
