Brillant Foyle Harps bring home the Kappa Cup after tournament in Belfast

LEAD HARPS

Foyle Harps 2006's made the long journey to Dungoyne, Belfast on Saturday to play in the in the Kappa Cup. It was a scorching day to be playing football but it proved to be a magnificent day for the young harps team who took the trophy home after magnificent performances throughout.

Group Stage

Their first game was against hosts Dungoyne. This was a very competitive match with both teams unable to unlock each other’s defences. Jude Campbell and Caden Boyle brought fine saves out of the Dungoyne goalkeeper but it wasn't to be. The game finished 0-0.

The second game was against Lisburn Youths. The Foyle Harps boys started brilliantly and took the lead early when Christian Sweeney found Daire Houston in midfield and he played Trent Kone in down the right

Kone skipped around a challenge to slot it home from 12 yards. They extended their lead moments after when Shaunie Bradley's great work in midfield sent Kone through to finish. The game finished 2-0.

The third game was against Greenisland. This game was total football from both sides, in which Caden and Jack McLaughlin impressed for the young Foyle Harps team. The game finished 0-0.

The last game in the group was against Castle Juniors. This was a tight contest with little chances, Josh Olphert and Adam McGirk had half chances to win but it wasn't to be. A special mention must go to goalkeeper Shane Bennett who made a world-class save in the last minute. The game finished 0-0.

Quarter Final

Foyle Harps faced Cranmoney in the quarterfinal and they completely dominated this game. Harps had to be patient though and it took until the last kick of the game before the deadlock was broken. Trent Kone again did the damage down the right, crossing for the in-rushing Shaunie Bradley to slot home from 10 yards. The game finished 1-0

Semi Final

Harps took on Bertie Peacocks in the last four. Both sides played attractive football in this game with little changes created. Adam McGirk and Jude Campbell came closest for the Harps but the game ended 0-0. Foyle Harps won on penalties 3-2, successful pens from Trent Kone, Caden McLaughlin and Jack McLaughlin. A special mention must go to goalkeeper Shane Bennett who tipped Berties first penalty onto the post.

Final

It was onto the final against Oliver Plunketts. Foyle Harps kept their best football to the final and played some brilliant stuff from back to front. They had various chances to take the lead through Adam McGirk, Christian Sweeney and Josh Olphert, but it was Olphert who got the decisive goal. Kone crossed from the right for Josh Olphert to score with a magnificent diving header. The final finished 1-0 which sparked massive celebrations among the players.

Congratulations to this young team who didn't concede a goal throughout the tournament.
