Unbroken Thread exists to ease the practical and financial burden that suddenly falls on families in the immediate days and weeks after a suicide

A new charitable initiative supporting families in the immediate aftermath of suicide is hosting an inaugral fundraiser in the city.

‘Unbroken Thread’, founded in memory of Darren Coyle, will mark its soft launch with a golf day on Saturday, June 13, at Foyle Golf Club.

The event will bring together more than 40 registered players, alongside friends, family and supporters from the local community. The day will close with a gathering at The Magnet Bar, from 4pm, where players, sponsors and supporters are invited to celebrate the launch, share memories of Darren, and raise a glass to the families the charity will go on to help.

The evening is open to all not only those taking part in the tournament and donations will be welcomed on the night.

‘In the year since we lost him, our family has come to understand first-hand just how overwhelming the days after a suicide can be, not only emotionally but practically and financially’

The date carries deep significance for Darren’s family. The golf day falls just two days after what would have been Darren's 49th birthday - June 11 - and in the lead-up to the first anniversary of his passing on 30th June 2025.

The launch has been deliberately timed to turn a period of profound loss into one of purpose, community and remembrance.

Unbroken Thread exists to ease the practical and financial burden that suddenly falls on families in the immediate days and weeks after a suicide. Funeral costs, unexpected expenses and the sheer weight of organising everything can be too much to carry alone - especially when grief is at its rawest and most traumatic.

Working through funeral directors, the charity offers discreet, compassionate support to families at the exact moment it is needed most.

The charity is currently completing the formal registration process. The 13th June event marks the public soft launch, ahead of full registration.

Darren’s family said he was “loved beyond words”.

“In the year since we lost him, our family has come to understand first-hand just how overwhelming the days after a suicide can be, not only emotionally but practically and financially.

“Unbroken Thread is our way of making sure that no other family has to face that alone.

“We're holding this golf day, a couple of days after what would have been Darren's 49th birthday and weeks before his first anniversary, because the most powerful thing we can do in his memory is help the next family who needs it.

“The response from our community has been extraordinary, and we are deeply grateful to every player, every sponsor, and every person who has donated. This is only the beginning."

‘Unbroken Thread’ can be supported through sponsorship or donation or by joining the evening gathering at The Magnet Bar. Donations would be welcomed on the night, or via the website www.unbrokenthread.net.
