Man who assaulted Derry security guard and medic jailed for six months

36-year-old Portstewart man pleaded guilty to two counts of assault on June 11.
Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man attacked a security guard and came off the worst.
Ciaran Patrick McKenna (36) of Coleraine Road in Portstewart admitted assaulting the security guard on June 11 and also assaulting a doctor in Altnagelvin Hospital on the same date.
The court heard that the defendant approached the security guard at the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in Waterloo Place and was told the office was closed.
McKenna became verbally abusive but then walked away before returning and assaulting the security guard who defended himself.
All of this was captured on CCTV and McKenna was arrested and taken to hospital.
While being treated in the hospital McKenna punched at a doctor who was treating him.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.
He said in the incident with the security guard McKenna had 'come off worst' from what he described as 'summary justice'.
As regards the assault on the doctor he said McKenna said he could not recall anything about this.
District Judge Ted Magill said that the defendant had 26 previous convictions.
He said there was 'far too much antisocial behaviour, abuse and assaults directed at health care staff'.
McKenna was sentenced to six months in custody.
