SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has supported a mass lobby at Westminster this week organised by the3million.org.uk, UNISON and New Europeans in support of EU citizens’ ‘Right to Remain’ in the UK post-Brexit – including in Derry and throughout the North. Mr Durkan said: “I was proud to sign this pledge calling on Theresa May to guarantee unilaterally the rights of EU citizens living here. “MPs from six different parties signed the pledge, representing the widespread concern of parliamentarians on the issue. “I firmly believe that workers from across Europe play a vital role in our public services, especially in the NHS and social care. Indeed, these services would not be able to survive without them. “Some of these workers are also long existing residents – and therefore they and their families deserve better than years of uncertainty and being reduced to bargaining chips in the upcoming Brexit negotiations. “Theresa May must therefore reconsider her stance on this important issue and unilaterally grant the ‘Right to Remain’ for EU citizens before the process of negotiations begins.”
