A number of Derry based companies have benefited from the controversial Rewnable Heating Incentive (RHI) scheme, it has emerged. This list includes the names of all limited companies and limited liability partnerships that have received support payments under the scheme above a threshold of £5,000, for the period from the opening of the scheme in 2012 to 28 February 2017. The application of a threshold and the publication of this list is being carried out in line with the judgement issued in the High Court on 1 March 2017. Work is progressing on a separate list which will contain the names of the individuals who are in receipt of payments of £5,000 or more under the non-domestic scheme. It is the department's intention to publish that list in the next few weeks once it has considered the individual cases in line with the content of the High Court judgement. The 'cash for ash' scandal is set to cost the Northern Ireland taxpayer £490m over the next 20 years if a solution is not found. The aim of the scheme was to encourage businesses to use more renewable energy. Businesses taking part in the scheme ended up receiving more in funding than the cost of fuel and the scheme became oversubscribed. There is no suggestion that any of the companies that took part in the scheme have engaged in wrongful activity. The Stormont government encouraged local companies to sign up at the time the scheme was launched. The following Derry companies benefitted from the scheme and also listed is the total payments made by 28th February 2017.
