IN PICTURES: Mayor enjoys first successful month of community engagement in Ballyarnett

The community-focused initiative was designed to recognise and support grassroots community and voluntary groups across the Council area

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has enjoyed a successful first month of his Mayoral Initiative as he visited various community groups in the Ballyarnett DEA.

The Mayor, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, launched his community-focused initiative earlier this year which was designed to recognise and support grassroots community and voluntary groups across the Council area.

The first area he focused on was Ballyarnett where he visited four different community hubs including Skeoge Community Hub, the Lunch Club at the Acorn Centre, CCÉ Baile na gCailleach at Studio 2 and the Leafair Well-Being Village.

Mayor McHugh said he thoroughly enjoyed visiting the many community groups across Ballyarnett and hearing about the incredible work they’re doing.

“It was truly inspiring to meet so many wonderful people from all walks of life this month. From men’s groups and luncheon clubs to musical gatherings for all ages, Ballyarnett is full of vibrant, welcoming communities doing fantastic work. I want to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to chat with me and share the stories behind your much-loved groups.

“A special word of thanks also goes to the volunteers and staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes. For many people, these groups are a lifeline, often their main source of connection and companionship each week, and that makes their work all the more vital.

“It was a pleasure to hear not only about the challenges you face, but also the many uplifting success stories that come from your dedication. The more we understand about the community sector, the better we can support it and help it continue to grow and thrive. I look forward to getting out in the coming months and meeting more of you all.”

The Mayor's community visits are scheduled to run from October 2025 through to May 2026, with a monthly focus on each DEA. The Mayor's office, in collaboration with the Community Development team, will be working with the Local Growth Partnership Boards approximately one month in advance to confirm the specific groups to be visited in each DEA. Further details on confirmed visits will be announced closer to the time.
