Friday was the most common day for people to be caught speeding, it has been revealed.

The figures, which were recently published as part of the Road Safety Partnership 2016 Statistical Report, showed that 16.9 percent of all speeding tickets issued during 2016 were on a Friday compared to those detected on a Sunday (8.4 percent.)

A total of 43,658 people across Northern Ireland were detected by the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership in 2016 either speeding or running a red light. This represents a decrease of 6.1 percent from the previous year’s figures.

The report also confirmed that July was the month with highest number of detections. The highest speed detected last year was 109 mph.

There are currently 87 permanently signed locations where eight safety camera vehicles operate. A total of 34,308 motorists were detected at mobile camera sites.

County Derry accounted for just 6.5 percent of all detections.

The Glenshane Road, Maghera was the most common stretch of road for motorists to be detected speeding. 374 motorists were detected travelling in excess of the speed limit at the Glenshane Road, Maghera while 56 were caught speeding at Glenshane Road, Derry.

205 drivers were also caught speeding on Ballyquin Road, Limavady with only 25 caught at Magherafelt Road, Moneymore.

More than two thirds (68.9 percent) of all speed detections were within a 30mph zone.
