Derry teenager remanded after persistent bail breaches

The girl who cannot be named due to her age breached the alcohol condition and curfew condition of her bail

Derry judge hits out at court delays

Derry Magistrate's Court

A 15-year-old girl who has breached bail 23 times since last July has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

The girl who cannot be named due to her age breached the alcohol condition and curfew condition of her bail.

The court was told that the girl had returned to a Children's Home under the influence and then left in a taxi before being found at 4am at her father's address.

It was said that the girl had appeared in court on 10 occasions in recent months and it was not believed she would adhere to.

Defence counsel Grainne McAnaney said that under the legislation the girl was entitled to bail unless she was deemed a risk to the public.

District Judge Suzanne Rice said that the girl had been drinking alcohol and out after curfew.

She said at a previous appearance in January the girl had assured her she would abide by conditions but had not.

The judge said that when she took alcohol the girl was putting herself and the public at risk and remanded her in custody.

She will appear again on March 26.
