Roadshow to bring support to unpaid carers in Western Trust Area

Wellness and expert advice for Derry carers at the Guildhall

Carers NI are bringing their “Together We Care Roadshow” to Derry's Guildhall on Thursday, February 26, from 10.00am to 12.30pm . This free drop in event is part of a multi year programme of roadshows supported by the National Lottery that will travel across Northern Ireland, bringing vital information, advice, and wellbeing support directly to unpaid carers in local communities.

Visitors will be able to meet the Carers NI team alongside a wide range of stallholders offering expert guidance on benefits, health and social care issues, carers’ rights, and local support services.

The morning roadshow will be officially opened by the Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Cllr Ruairí McHugh and will also feature, wellbeing sessions including free massages and wellness checks, a crafting session and uplifting musical performances from the U3A choir.

The event is open to anyone who looks after a family member, partner or friend with an illness, disability, mental health problem or addiction. Whether carers are seeking advice, hoping to connect with others in similar situations, or simply want to enjoy a cuppa and a chat, no registration is required—just come along, and feel free to bring a friend.

Unpaid carers play a crucial role in Northern Ireland’s health and social care system. There are around 34,397 unpaid carers living in the Western Health Trust area, with a staggering 11,133 of those providing over 50 hours of care per week.

Joleen Cunningham, Public Affairs Manager said: “Unpaid carers are collectively saving Northern Ireland’s health service an estimated £5.8 billion every year—the equivalent of £16 million per day .

“Yet this comes at a huge cost  76% of carers told us they had continued providing care despite feeling like they were at breaking point. Despite a half of carers saying that their own health has suffered, 1 in 3 put off health treatments for themselves due to their caring role. Many have not a break from caring in years.

“Ensuring local carers have access to clear information, emotional support, and pathways to practical assistance is therefore more important than ever.

“Our Together We Care Roadshow is designed to reach carers where they are- with support, advice and a warm welcome. We are excited to bring this event to Derry and hope as many carers as possible will join us on the day.”
