Traffic disruption and training exercises scheduled for Craigavon Bridge

Overnight closures and week-long one-way systems announced to facilitate essential bridge maintenance

Craigavon Bridge

The Department for Infrastructure and project partners have announced a series of essential maintenance works and emergency training exercises on Craigavon Bridge, beginning today, Friday, February 6 2026.

Motorists and pedestrians in Derry are advised to prepare for overnight closures, daytime one-way systems, and a visible increase in emergency service activity as various phases of the current infrastructure project are completed.

Emergency Training Exercise – Friday, February 6 - A joint health and safety training day involving Farrans and NI Water is currently underway on the bridge. This includes a staged rescue exercise conducted by Foyle Search and Rescue. The public is advised that the increased presence of rescue teams is for training purposes only and does not represent an active emergency.

Overnight Full Closure – February 6 to 7 - To facilitate the safe removal of a barrier on the lower deck of the bridge, a full road closure will be in place from the Foyle Road Junction to Duke Street Junction tonight (Friday) into Saturday morning.

Daytime One-Way System – February 9 to 13 - As Phase One of the scaffolding removal begins, a one-way traffic system will be implemented daily (9.00am - 5.00pm) next week to ensure the safety of workers and the public. One-way traffic will operate from the Foyle Road Junction toward the Duke Street Junction. A clearly signed diversion route will be in place for motorists travelling in the opposite direction.
