Ewan Lecky from Strabane, a M&E Craft Fitter Apprentice with NI Water
A local man is helping NI Water launch its Apprenticeship Week campaign this year.
Ewan Lecky, a M&E Craft Fitter Apprentice with NI Water, is calling on local school leavers and career changers to dive into the utility's 2026 apprenticeship intake.
He’s encouraging others to explore the wide range of apprenticeships available at NI Water this year, highlighting the supportive environment and excellent training provided both on the job and at college.
NI Water is proud to champion the value of apprenticeships as part of Apprenticeship Week 2026, which runs from February 2 to February 6 2026.
Apprenticeship Week shines a spotlight on the accomplishments of apprentices and recognises the essential role they play in supporting local businesses, communities and the wider economy.
NI Water has 27 Entry Level opportunities available for its September 2026 intake, including Water Utilities, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Engineering Plant Operators, Science, Construction Engineering, Hydraulic Modelling and Internal Audit.
Successful applicants will enjoy a comprehensive benefits package from their very first day. This includes a competitive salary, structured career development and fully funded qualifications, all aimed at ensuring a strong start within the company.
Helen Devlin, Head of HR Operations at NI Water, said: “We very much champion our apprentices here at NI Water. They are energetic contributors, bringing new ideas and adaptability to address industry challenges. As a business, we also know that apprenticeships not only boost productivity and quality, but also foster staff retention, loyalty, and continuous improvement.”

Ewan Lecky from Strabane joined NI Water as a M&E Craft Fitter Apprentice after sixth form at school.
Ewan said: “I discovered this NI Water Apprenticeship through my cousin, who inspired me with his experiences, especially the chance to work with equipment like pumps, motors, and gearboxes. This hands-on learning and the opportunity to continually solve complex problems drew me in.
“A typical day could mean working with a mentor and going anywhere in the North West, working on clean water and wastewater sites, tackling tasks such as unblocking pumps or installing motors. The role offers constant learning, from multiskilling with electricians to completing various training courses like Water Hygiene and Forklift Training, all of which boost my confidence.
“My ambition is to master M&E Services, mentor others, and become known for innovative problem-solving. It is a great apprenticeship with great people that look after you. You are learning while you work and every day you learn something new. You go to college once a week which gives you more confidence within your work.
“I highly recommend applying for this year’s apprenticeship scheme for its supportive environment and excellent training, both on the job and at college.”
