£43 million state-of-the-art special educational needs facility opens in Derry

A new £43 million building at Ardnashee School and College has been officially opened, marking a significant investment in special educational provision for the local community. 

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed by First Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA and special guest Johnny McDaid. McDaid, a globally successful musician with Snow Patrol, is a proud Derry native who has strong roots and heritage in the city, making his involvement particularly meaningful for the local community

The Northland Road Academy features cutting-edge facilities designed to enhance learning and development opportunities for pupils with special educational needs, including a hydrotherapy pool, immersive suite, sensory spaces, and outdoor play areas.

The project, delivered by Woodvale Construction Ltd, recently won "Education Project of the Year" at the Construction Employers Federation Awards, with judges praising the "exceptional quality of finish" and noting that the project "not only delivers excellence in construction but transforms lives".

First Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “It was a privilege to be invited to open the ASC Northland Road Academy, and it was great to receive such a wonderful welcome from so many happy, smiling children.

“This new school is a game-changer in terms of SEN provision in Derry and the North West. The state-of-the-art facilities will give children and young people – now and for generations to come – the best possible educational experiences, helping them to achieve their full potential.

“I want to congratulate governors, staff, parents and everyone involved in this award-winning project, and I wish the school and its pupils every success for the future.”

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said: “Every child deserves a place where they can grow and thrive, and the official opening of Ardnashee School and College will transform special needs provision in Londonderry.

“This fantastic school will be a safe and inclusive space, ensuring every child who comes through its door is understood, supported and equipped to achieve their goals in life. I have no doubt it will open many doors to a future of hope and opportunity for all its students, now and for many years to come. Congratulations to everyone who made this possible.”

Dr Tomas Adell, Chief Transformation Officer – SEN, Education Authority, added: "This remarkable facility sets a new standard for special educational needs provision. The purpose-built spaces, from the hydrotherapy pool to the sensory rooms, will enable our dedicated staff to deliver truly personalised learning experiences.

“It is testament to effective partnership working that this complex project was delivered with minimal disruption, and I am particularly pleased that it has already been recognised with the Construction Employers Federation's 'Education Project of the Year' award. This building will transform the educational experience for generations of pupils."
