Waterside Sinn Féin councillor Caitlin Deeney has announced her intention to step down from the role due to personal reasons.
Cllr Deeney has served on Derry City and Strabane District Council over two years and the party’s Council Group Leader Christopher Jackson thanked her for her service.
He said: “I want to wish Caitlin the very best as she steps down. She has been an outstanding advocate for the people of the Waterside. The party will now begin a process to select her replacement but I know she will continue to make a difference as a dedicated local activist.”
Commenting after the announcement, Cllr. Deeney said: “It’s been a huge privilege to represent the Waterside in council and this decision is something that I haven’t taken lightly. I have used my voice in council to put a focus on issues such as childcare, violence against women and girls and to be a strong advocate for the environment. I’m proud of the work our council team are doing to deliver a better future for everyone within Derry and Strabane but for me, my focus needs to be elsewhere.
“I will work with the party to select a replacement and support him or her in any way I can going forward. Finally I would like to thank Sinn Féin for their confidence in me and for the people of the Waterside who in placing their trust in me gave me the opportunity to be their voice in council over the last two years.”
