New framework launched to help Derry schools, community groups and businesses become more inclusive

by Marianne Flood

A new standard has been launched in Derry to help schools, community groups and businesses become more inclusive.

‘Valuing People through Diversity and Inclusion’ provides a framework of good practice for managing a diverse workforce and building an inclusive culture.

The standard was launched by Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Maolíosa McHugh.

“Derry and Strabane are currently working with Belfast on a joint bid to become European Capital of Culture, which is a great example of diversity and inclusivity,” he commented.

John Mulholland Managing Director of PDQ Solutions Ltd, who is the assessor for the standard, said it recognises individual talents and looks at the similarities between  people rather than their differences.

“It is about providing a holistic approach to diversity and it is relevant to organisations, regardless size, sector and level of maturity.

“The Standard provides a systematic and principled approach to people management and development.

“Building productive relationships with others, be they customers, clients or people within communities is also a key tenet of the Standard. “

Yesterday’s launch was also attended by the principals of several schools in the city.

“I was delighted with the warm welcome I received and the response from the attendees,” commented Mr Mulholland.

“The feedback was very, very positive and it was nice to bring something new to Derry.”

“I can certainly confirm that there are many, many excellent organisations in Derry and I have been lucky to have worked with so many of them over the years.

“Why wouldn't organisations be they private sector, public sector or third sector not want to demonstrate their commitment to diversity and inclusion to their staff and the communities they serve.”
