East Derry MLA Claire Sugden presses Health Minister over East Derry GP access crisis
East Derry MLA Claire Sugden has raised serious concerns regarding the persistent challenges residents face when attempting to access local GP services. The Independent MLA has tabled a series of formal questions to the Minister of Health to address the barriers currently obstructing patient care in the primary sector.
Highlighting the growing frustration within her constituency, Ms Sugden noted that while the public acknowledges the immense pressure on GP practices, the difficulty in securing timely appointments is becoming an unsustainable burden for many families.
Claire Sugden MLA said: “Access to GP services is something that many people continue to raise with me across East Londonderry. People understand that GP practices are under significant pressure, but they are increasingly concerned about how difficult it can be to secure an appointment when they need one.
“Primary care plays a crucial role in our health system, and when people struggle to access their GP it can have wider consequences, including additional pressure on hospital services.
"Technology can play an important role in helping practices manage appointments and improve how services are organised. Online systems, telephone triage and other tools can help make access more efficient for many patients.

“At the same time, it is important that services continue to work for everyone. Some patients, particularly older people, may still need more traditional ways of accessing appointments and support when contacting their GP practice.
"That is why I have asked the Minister what steps are being taken to improve access to GP services and what consideration is being given to the different ways patients access primary care.
“Ensuring that people can access their GP when they need to is fundamental to the functioning of our health service and to supporting patients to get the care and advice they need at the right time.”
