Boxing: Derry pro Connor Coyle to climb back into the ring again in Dublin

Connor Coyle will aim to make it three from three in his professional career when he takes to the ring again in February. The local man (pictured) has announced his next fight that will once again take place in the National Stadium in Dublin. The former Commonwealth bronze medallist has already built a name for himself in the boxing world with one stoppage and one victory on points. In his first professional fight Coyle needed just 70 seconds to dispose of the threat of Euris Silverio while three weeks later he made his home debut in style with a points win over Santos Medrano. Now the 26-year-old is back in training at St Joseph’s club in Galliagh before returning to his base in Florida after Christmas. Reflecting on the past few months Coyle said he was really pleased with how his career on the professional side of boxing has started out. “You can’t complain about two wins. Getting the stoppage in the first was obviously a better result than the second fight,” he said. “Medrano was too negative and it just wasn’t a good fight for me but a win is a win. I wanted a different kind of victory but he had a game plan. He fights very regularly and I think he didn’t want to get injured for his next one.” Training is well underway for the next bout and while Coyle said he would have liked it to go sooner he is enjoying his training. “I was hoping to get another fight in December but it didn’t come through. In the end it probably didn’t do much harm as I was able to get a bit of a break and going into the holiday season it might not have been the best time,” admitted the 26-year-old. “I’m back in training now and I’ll go over to America straight after Christmas for a further six week camp so I’m feeling good.” One massive advantage Coyle will have is his home support and he agrees they were a factor in getting him over the line last time out. “Even the Irish Boxing Union and the website were talking about how loud the Derry noise was and to be honest I would be expecting double for the next fight,” he said. “The last fight as a bit close to the holiday season but for this next one people may see it as a chance for a bit of a break so I’m hoping for a lot more support and a lot more noise.” Looking ahead to February the local man admitted he is already itching to get back in the ring. “At this stage I would fight every week if I could but the coaches are wary of my risk of getting an injury,” Coyle explained. “The aim is to have a fight a month in 2017 after this one in February so I can end the year with about ten fights which could be good going. “I’m building up to title fights and I’ll slow down then when there are a lot more negotiations and media that goes into it,” he added. Tickets will be available after Christmas and information will be released on the ‘Connor Coyle Professional Boxing’ Facebook page.
