The Mayor Councillor Ruairi McHugh visited Learmount Community Group as part of Mayor's initiative showcasing small community groups across Derry City and Strabane District Council’s area.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has marked another successful month of his mayoral initiative, engaging with community groups across the Sperrins DEA.
Cllr Ruairí McHugh launched the community-focused initiative earlier this year to recognise and support grassroots community and voluntary organisations throughout the Council area.
During March, the Mayor visited Learmount Community Centre in Park Village and Glenmoran Community Association, where he met with volunteers, staff, and local residents involved in their work.
Speaking following his visits, Mayor McHugh said: “I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Learmount Community Centre and Glenmoran Community Association as part of my wider engagement with groups across the Sperrins DEA. It was fantastic to meet the dedicated volunteers and staff whose commitment sustains these vital organisations.
“For many people, these groups are a lifeline, providing connection, support, and companionship on a regular basis, which makes their contribution to our communities all the more important.

“It was also invaluable to hear not only about the challenges they face, but the many positive outcomes and success stories that stem from their work. The more we understand the community and voluntary sector, the better positioned we are to support it and help it continue to grow and thrive. I look forward to continuing these visits and meeting more groups in the months ahead.”

The Mayor’s programme of community visits is running from October 2025 through to May 2026, with a dedicated focus on a different District Electoral Area each month. The Mayor’s Office, working in partnership with the Community Development team, will liaise with Local Growth Partnership Boards approximately one month in advance to identify and confirm the groups to be visited in each area. Further details will be announced in due course.
