Promising Derry GAA star and Australian Rules target Callum Brown is currently spending 10 days in Australia to ‘have a look around’. Back in March, the Ulster minor and U20 medal winner was watched by scouts from Sydney based GWS Giants while playing for Limavady. Former Cavan player Nicholas Walsh is a Defensive Coach with the Giants and the club’s List Manager Jason McCartney were at Scroggy Road to watch Brown play at midfield in an Ulster League game. The following day, Brown went to Dublin for three days of testing, but as Limavady Wolfhounds Chairman Ronan Curley explained, the St Mary’s Limavady student had always planned to head ‘down under’ when the county season concluded. “The Derry (U20) campaign is just over and that was always the plan that when that involvement finished, he would go out and have a look around,” Curley told the County Derry Post. Brown flew to Dubai on Sunday where he was met by representatives of the Giants and he will spend 10 days in Sydney. Brown, also an accomplished soccer player, played as an impact sub in Derry’s run to the 2017 All-Ireland minor final defeat by Kerry. He was called into the McKenna Cup panel under former minor boss Damian McErlain but was too young to play for the senior side. His stellar performances at full-forward for Derry U20s rubberstamped the 17-year-old’s prospects of becoming an asset to the county in the future. “Factually he could not sign a contract until he was 18 - which is in August,” Curley added. “He is going out for a look around but then there could be further contact in August.” Brown enjoyed school success for St Mary’s Limavady under the management of former Sydney Swans player Chrissy McKaigue. Brown is the third Derry player to come under the attention of AFL scouts. Oisin McWilliams and his Swatragh clubmate Anton Tohill were also at trials in Dublin last December. Tohill, also a member of Derry’s U20 squad, followed it up with a further AFL combine in Florida and also confirmed his plans for a follow up trip to Australia at the end of September. His father and 1993 All-Ireland senior medal winner Anthony had a spell with the Melbourne Demons.
