POLICE in Magherafelt have appealed for information after a car was deliberately set on fire at Leckagh Drive, in the town in the early hours of yesterday (Monday) morning.
The Peugeot 306 Cabriolet was completely destroyed in the blaze which occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday.
Last night, Investigating Officer, Sergeant Sam Young confirmed that the fire was being treated as arson.
Local DUP councillor, Anne Forde has condemned the incident.
She said: “It is very disappointing that once again Leckagh is being publicised for all the wrong reasons, especially when we work so hard to try and keep the estate a safe place for all the residents.
“Back in December a pensioner’s home was petrol bombed and now we have this.
“I totally condemn this latest incident and I would urge anyone with information to contact the police.
“People in the local area need to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police so we can continue to promote the estate,” she said.
Last night a spokesperson for the PSNI said: “We are keen to hear form anyone who saw suspicious activity close to the car, in particular anyone who was seen interfering with the soft-top roof.”
Information can be given on the police non-emergency number, 101, or by calling the Crimestoppers Charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
