Council reminds people about risk of cancer associated with sunbed use

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council wants to remind people about the risks associated with sunbed use. Sunbeds expose the skin to concentrated levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can be equivalent to the midday tropical sun. In Northern Ireland, it is illegal for under 18’s to use a sunbed on commercial premises. It is Council’s responsibility to enforce these laws and provide support for business to ensure they comply with the current regulations that are in place. The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey said: “It is crucial that tanning operators provide customers with up to date information on the risks associated with sunbed usage. Young people are easily influenced and although regulations are in place, it is vitally important that they are aware of the dangers to their long term health.” Dr. Miriam McCarthy from The Public Health Agency said: “Even occasional use of sunbeds may lead to skin cancer, premature aging and eye damage. Young people who are frequent users are at particular risk and need to be aware that the damage is not always visible straight away. It builds up gradually and can cause lifelong problems.” Marbeth Ferguson, Skin Cancer Co-coordinator for Cancer Focus, said: “Home hire of sunbeds is a particular problem. Research has shown that almost one in ten of 11-16 year olds have used a sunbed, many of whom have accessed one at home.
