‘Absolutely disgraceful’, as reckless riders damage historic sixth-century site

Burt hillfort, one of Inishowen’s most iconic landmarks, left badly torn-up following scrambler activity
Buncrana County Councillor Jack Murray has condemned damage caused by scrambler bikes at Grianan of Aileach, describing the incident as “absolutely disgraceful”.
The historic Burt hillfort, one of Inishowen’s most iconic landmarks, was left torn-up following scrambler activity in the area over the weekend.
The protected site, which attracts visitors from across Ireland and beyond, is regarded as one of the most important heritage locations in the county, and it’s thought to date back to the early sixth century.
Sinn Fein Cllr Murray has revealed how witnesses have seen those believed to be responsible, and he confirmed that Gardaí are currently investigating the incident. He urged anyone with information that could assist the inquiry to come forward.
Speaking about the damage, Cllr Murray said the situation highlights the need for a stronger on-site presence to help protect the historic monument.
According to the Councillor, staff at the site could play a role not only in welcoming visitors and providing tours but also in monitoring activity around the landmark.
He said having personnel regularly present would help safeguard the monument and deter behaviour that could harm the historic structure or the surrounding landscape.
