Primary 7 pupils from Sacred Heart PS, in Derry's Waterside were proud to be the first in Northern Ireland to take part in the ‘Finnesse Future Explorers’ new initiative programme whereby they were given the opportunity to discuss their future career dreams on Monday morning.
The three P7 classes spent 90 minutes taking part in the programme which used challenges, storytelling, discussion, visual prompts and hands-on activities to help them explore a wide and diverse range of careers, begin linking interests and strengths to future roles, and build confidence in talking about their future.
Monday’s programme was led by Founding director of ‘Finnesse Careers and Empowerment’, Finneen Bradley and her team of Level 7 qualified careers professionals, and Monday’s visit to Sacred Heart PS made it the first initiative in Northern Ireland to bring this level of professional careers expertise into primary schools which ensures early career conversations that are inclusive, evidence-informed and developmentally appropriate.
Speaking before the programme start, Ms. Bradley said: ‘It is a privilege to work with the Primary 7 pupils at Sacred Heart. In just one morning, we saw career awareness expand significantly, with STEM career mentions increasing fivefold and awareness of skilled trade pathways more than tripling.
‘The pupils were incredibly perceptive and engaged, and their confidence grew as they realised just how many possibilities are open to them. It shows how powerful early careers education can be when young people are given the space to explore their futures.’

The programme directly aligns with the Northern Ireland Careers Strategy, which calls for careers education to begin earlier, raise aspirations, address social mobility gaps, and build confidence and skills awareness from a young age.
Sacred Heart teacher Mr. Conrad McGuigan added his support to those comments, adding that the three classes enjoyed their participation in the event and gained so much from it.
‘Our P7s were proud to be the very first primary school in Northern Ireland to be involved in this new initiative whereby they had the chance to discuss their future career dreams.
‘Today, using a very interactive approach, different pathways to achieving their future jobs were explored. Teamwork and communication were to the fore in the activities that engaged the children and future careers in many fields were discussed including Healthcare (NHS) - Doctor, nurse, dentist, and physiotherapist; STEM Technology - Engineers, software developers, and IT Specialists; Education - Teachers, tutors, and childcare specialists; Protective Services - Paramedic, fire services; Creative Industries - Digital marketing, content creation, video editing, and graphic design; Skilled Trades - Plumbing, electrical work, and construction; Logistics & Transport and the different routes in which these can be achieved.
'The children were encouraged to ‘Reach for the Stars’ and be all that they can be. A wonderful experience for all.’
Sacred Heart PS Principal, Mrs. Louise Cunning thanked Ms. Bradley and her team, adding: ‘We were delighted to host the ‘Finnesse Future Explorers’ programme at Sacred Heart PS. The session gave our P7 pupils a valuable opportunity to think about their future pathways and the many options available to them.
'Their engagement throughout the morning highlighted just how beneficial early career exploration can be. We really appreciate Finneen Bradley and her team for delivering such an informative and engaging experience for our pupils.’
