Mayor Ruairi McHugh was joined by the Easter Bunny, Dawn McDaid, DCSDC and Jennifer Rouse, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Children's Ward, Altnagelvin Hospital for the Leisure Easter Egg Campaign launch
Chocolate and fitness may not be the most obvious combination, but this Easter the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, is inviting local residents to strike the perfect balance by supporting a special Easter Egg Swap campaign across Council leisure centres.
The initiative encourages people to donate an Easter egg at participating Council facilities in exchange for a complimentary fitness class pass. All donated eggs will be gifted to young patients in the Children’s Ward at Altnagelvin Hospital, helping to bring some seasonal cheer to children spending Easter in hospital.
The campaign is open to everyone and you don’t need to be a gym member to take part. Anyone who drops in an egg will receive a fitness class pass that can be used at any Council-owned leisure centre or gifted to a friend or family member.
Launching the appeal, Mayor McHugh said: “Easter is a time of joy and togetherness, but for some families it can be a very difficult period if a child is unwell and in hospital. Through this simple swap, our community has an opportunity to show kindness and solidarity while also taking a positive step for their own health and wellbeing.
“I have always been proud of the generosity of people across Derry and Strabane. By donating an Easter egg, you are helping to ensure that children in hospital feel remembered and supported at this special time of year. I would encourage everyone, if they can, to pick up an extra egg and take part.”
