Derry man Sean Doherty's 100 mile challenge in support of Foyle Hospice

A Derry man has set himself the inspiring challenge of running 100 miles throughout February in support of Foyle Hospice — a cause that has become deeply personal to him.

Sean Doherty had never imagined a time when he or his family would need the services of Foyle Hospice. Like many people in the city, he had always known of the Hospice as a vital part of the local community — but had assumed it was a service solely for cancer patients.

That perception changed when his Godmother, Marie Kelpie, was admitted to Foyle Hospice for palliative care during the final stages of her battle with dementia. Around the same time, Sean’s cousin, Michelle Kennedy, was also receiving care at the Hospice throughout 2025, before she died of cancer in January 2026.

Experiencing Hospice care first-hand had a profound impact on Sean. He explained: “Seeing the compassion, dignity, and comfort shown to both patients and their families during such difficult times was incredibly moving. The staff didn’t just care for my Godmother and my cousin - they supported all of us.”

Sadly, both Marie and Michelle passed away within a week of each other while under the care of Foyle Hospice. It was during this time that Sean decided he wanted to do something meaningful to give back to the organisation that had supported his family through their darkest days.

That decision led to an ambitious personal challenge: running 100 miles during the month of February in aid of Foyle Hospice.

“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Sean admitted. “It’s a huge challenge for me, but I’m determined to see it through.”

Sean initially set himself a fundraising target of £1,000 - a goal he has already surpassed. He believes the overwhelming support he has received reflects just how deeply valued Foyle Hospice is within the community.

Sean continued: “So far, I’ve completed 20 miles and I’m hoping to reach close to 30 miles by the end of the week, which puts me well on track to complete the full 100 miles by 28th of February.”

Sean is keen to emphasise that every donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference. He said: “Every penny helps Foyle Hospice continue providing care, comfort, and dignity to patients and families when they need it most. I’m incredibly grateful for all the support so far.”
