A driving instructor based in Derry has posted a shocking video to his Facebook page showing a clear example of the dangers of e-scooters in the local area.

According to PACTS, since 2019 there has been a total of 63 road deaths involving e-scooters in the UK, with 12 deaths in 2025 and three deaths so far in 2026.

The frightening video, posted by the Derry driving instructor, shows four young teenage boys on e-scooters zooming past a road in Pennyburn one after the other wearing dark clothing and seemingly not looking for oncoming traffic.

The driving instructor said that as a local driving instructor in Derry, he is seeing this happen every day during his lessons and posted the video to spread awareness on the "worrying trend".

"It’s going to result in a fatality at some point and by the sounds of it I’m not the only person to experience this!" David Hayes of Aim 2 Pass driving school Derry said.

This was after David's post received a huge amount of feedback from local people in the area who have also witnessed the dangers of e-scooters in the area.

"It nearly happened..not once, twice or three times, but four in a row! This happened when I was driving out of New Street in Pennyburn.

"The young lads didn’t even look or acknowledge my presence at all. More disturbing was their lack of awareness of the danger they put themselves in," David said.

The Derry driving instructor said that he managed to have a word with one of the boys travelling on one of the e-scooters:

"He only stopped after I put my window down to try and educate him about their reckless behaviour. He took it well to be fair, but this isn’t improving people’s mindsets on the dangers.

"These machines are not legal so why are the police not enforcing this enough? Sorry for the rant but it was scary stuff," David said on his Facebook post.

Local people from Derry agreed that young boys on e-scooters in the area are putting themselves and others in great danger.

People have also pointed out that it is so much worse at night time when the e-scooter users are not wearing high-vis clothing.

One person commented, "This is a frequent thing but it's so much worse when they do it at night time and you can't see them because they're dressed in black, hoods up and not a reflector or light in sight."

Another person said, "I was in that area on Sunday. I nearly took three out! I was on a main busy road and they came out of nowhere, all dressed in dark colours and the scooters were black. Weaving in and out out traffic....it scared me."

"Same area last week at the traffic lights...he was nearly dead if my wife didn't scream," another person added.
