Derry and Strabane lead the way with zero road deaths in 2025

While Northern Ireland recorded 57 total fatalities last year, the North West district stands alone in preventing any loss of life on its roads

Derry and Strabane lead the way with zero road deaths in 2025

Life After is proud to highlight and celebrate a truly remarkable and hopeful milestone for the district: Derry City and Strabane District recorded zero road deaths in 2025, making it the only area in Northern Ireland to achieve this in the past year.

This achievement is so significant that it cannot go unmentioned, unrecognised, or uncelebrated. It represents lives saved, families spared unimaginable loss, and a community proving that safer roads are not just an aspiration, but a reality that can be achieved.

This is more than a statistic. It is the result of everyday choices made by drivers, pedestrians, passengers, cyclists, families, and young people across the district. Each careful decision, each moment of patience, and each act of awareness on our roads has helped make this possible.

We warmly congratulate the people of Derry and Strabane on this incredible success. This achievement belongs to everyone in the community and stands as clear proof that zero road deaths is achievable, and that Derry and Strabane can lead the way for the rest of Northern Ireland.

Christopher, Project Coordinator at Life After, praised the collective effort behind the milestone: “This is genuinely wonderful news and something that cannot be overlooked. Zero road deaths doesn’t happen by chance - it happens because people choose to look out for one another and take responsibility for their actions on the road. And that happens because organisations and groups work together to raise the importance of preventing deaths on our roads.”

He continued: “The people of Derry and Strabane have shown what is possible. This achievement sends a powerful message: zero road deaths should always be the goal, and it can be achieved when a community commits to safety.”

Life After supports individuals and families bereaved by road traffic collisions, and we understand all too well the devastating and lifelong impact that road deaths have. That is why recognising this moment is so important, it honours prevention, responsibility, and the value of every life.

As we look ahead, we hope this milestone inspires continued care and caution on our roads.

“Our hope,” Christopher added, “is that we carry this momentum into 2026 and beyond. If we continue to drive safely and remain mindful of the risks, there is every reason to believe we can do it again.”

Derry and Strabane did it. This is something to be proud of, and something worth celebrating.

Here’s hoping 2026 is another safe year on our roads.
