A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with assaulting his grandparents.

Kieran Gillen (25) of Altcar Park in Derry was charged with the incident that occurred on April 13 last year after police were called to a report of a domestic incident.

Gillen's grandmother reported that he had come to her house acting in a threatening manner, assaulting both his grandparents and shattering a glass panel in their door.

Defence Barrister Michael Donaghey called it a 'frightening incident' for both injured parties but said that Gillen had no record and was unlikely to be appearing before the court again in the future.

He was sentenced to four months in custody, suspended for two years and given a two year restraining order.
