Translink announces essential engineering works on Derry rail line

Works on the local line will focus on tunnel maintenance at Castlerock and Downhill, as well as critical culvert repairs between Coleraine and Derry

'Rail upgrade will go a long way in addressing the regional imbalance' - Mark H Durkan

Translink is advising passengers to plan ahead for a series of essential engineering works that will impact the Derry line over two weekends in February and March.

The planned maintenance is part of a wider infrastructure investment to maintain safety and reliability across the network.

Works on the local line will focus on tunnel maintenance at Castlerock and Downhill, as well as critical culvert repairs between Coleraine and Derry.

To facilitate these upgrades, the rail line between Coleraine and Derry will be closed on the following dates: Saturday, February 21/Sunday, February 22 and Saturday, February 28/Sunday, March 1.

The line closure between Coleraine and Derry (North-West Transport Hub) will also affect the 10.43pm train ex Coleraine on Friday night (February 20 and February 27).

Last service on Friday night (10.43pm) will operate as a bus substitution from Coleraine to the NW Transport Hub. Rail replacement bus services will meet Belfast-bound trains at Coleraine.

Rail replacement buses will operate a direct service between Coleraine and NW Transport Hub as well as a stopper service for Castlerock and Bellarena passengers.

Translink’s Director of Infrastructure and Projects John Glass commented: “We are committed to maintaining and enhancing our rail infrastructure to deliver a high quality, safe and sustainable public transport network today, and for future generations.

“We’ve planned these works carefully so that several essential upgrades – from tunnel repairs to platform extension work and embankment maintenance, as well as other improvements – can be delivered in one closure period.

“We’d like to thank all our passengers and local neighbours for their patience and understanding while these important works are carried out, helping to maintain safe and reliable services for the future.”

“We apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience, and we advise our customers to check their timetables in advance of travel on the website www.translink.co.uk or Translink’s Journey Planner as bus substitutions may operate different schedules to regular train timetables.”
