A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court for two counts of assault and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Hermon Zrmikael (28) of Great James Street in Derry was charged with the assault that occurred on August 19 last year after police were called to the Migrants Forum.

It was reported that Zrmikael had been involved in an argument where he punched another resident in the face.

Zrmikael was then said to have taken three pool balls and thrown them at the same person but hitting a member of staff.

Zrmikael made full admissions when questioned by police.

He was arrested again on September 11 last year when police were called to reports of a man holding a knife when with a woman outside a hotel.

Zrmikael was searched and arrested on suspicion of possession of a pointed weapon, something he admitted to when questioned.

A defence solicitor said that Zrmikael had pleaded guilty to the offences, telling the court that he had been acting irrationally after stopping taking his medication.

Deputy District Judge Sean O'Hare said that Zrmikael had 'a lot of issues' but said that the offenses occurred when he made the choice to stop taking his medication, sentencing him to nine months in custody.
