A man has received a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates' Court for stealing clothes from Frasers.

Sean Doherty (25) of Clon Dara in Derry was charged on January 25 after police were called to Frasers following reports of two males entering the shop with a gym bag and taking a number of items valued at £240.

A minor altercation ensued when they were stopped but there were no charges from this.

The items were returned and deemed fit to sell.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that Doherty has 73 previous convictions.

He said that, while this is a 'terrible record', only two of the charges were for theft, with the most recent being in 2019.

He said that Doherty has mainly drug convictions, having become 'addicted at a young age'.

He said that he was released from custody in December and, with no money, attempted to steal the clothes in 'an act of desperation'.

He added that Doherty accepted it was 'a stupid thing to do'.

He was sentenced to three months in custody, suspended for twelve months.
