Suspended sentence for Donegal man at Derry Magistrate's Court

The mn appeared before Derry Magistrates' Court

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

David McKay (19) of Glenshane Road in Derry was charged after police found him sleeping in a car with the lights on while out on routine patrol on May 16, 2025.

The court heard police noticed a smell of cannabis and searched the car. A subsequent blood test found traces of the drug in his system.

Defence Barrister Fergal McCormack said that McKay is a 'young man who has had problems with substances' but has 'subsequently got it under control'.

He added that there were no additional drugs found in the car and, since McKay was sleeping, there was no immediate risk to the public.

He was given a 12 month disqualification from driving and ordered to pay a fine of £150.
