To mark International Reading Day, the students of St Joseph’s Boys’ School in Derry spent Friday last visiting residents of Beechwood Court as well as local primary schools, St. Eithne’s and Holy Family where they shared stories, conversations and generally entertained.
The event, organised by the Head of the English Department, Ms. Carla McCay, brought together students from across year groups who volunteered their time to read aloud a selection of short stories, poems, and reflective pieces at the three venues.
First visit was to St. Eithne’s PS where the students mixed with the Primary 7 pupils for an hour, telling and sharing stories, and even talking about their experiences of moving to ‘Big School’ in September.
Then it was on to Holy Family PS where the boys were greeted by new principal, Mr. Gavin Doherty before joining pupils there for similar activities.
At Beechwood Court, there was a drama/singing performance by the students before getting down to some ‘serious reading’ with the residents, telling stories, reciting poetry and creating companionship with the older members of the community in Creggan.

Speaking at Friday’s event, Mrs. McCay said they were given a warm welcome on their visits, adding: ‘These visits out into the local community created a warm and lively atmosphere. Today’s event sparked meaningful interactions between generations.
‘Our St. Joseph’s students embodied the true spirit of our Catholic ethos, showing kindness, compassion, and respect for all members of the community.
‘International Reading Day is not only a celebration of literacy, but also an opportunity to build connections, to listen, and to share joy through the power of stories.’
St Joseph’s Boys’ School continues to promote service, community engagement, and the value of reading both within and beyond the classroom. The school plans to build on the success of this event with further intergenerational activities throughout the year.
