Holy Child Primary School opened their doors on Wednesday to honour grandparents with warm greetings, tea and sandwiches and opportunities to celebrate the intergenerational bonds that shape families in Creggan and beyond.
To start proceedings off on Wednesday morning, the pupils and grandparents were welcomed to St. Mary’s Church for a special Mass celebrated by local priests Fr. McFaul, Fr Ignazy and Fr. White, before being served with refreshments afterwards in the Community Room at the church.

The Nursery, P1 and P2 pupils met with their grandparents in the school earlier in the morning and spent time showing off their artwork and explaining how the school day works for them.
The school’s assembly hall was a meeting place early afternoon for P7 pupils and their grandparents as they shared refreshments, played games, took part in designing artwork celebrating Grandparents Day and grannies were even treated to a manicure.
Speaking at Wednesday’s celebration, Mrs. Pat Concannon, Principal said she was delighted how the day went and paid tribute to the many grandparents who took time out to attend the Mass at St. Mary’s and then back to the school for refreshments.
‘It was a wonderful morning! We are so thankful for the love, support, and encouragement our extended school family brings to our pupils daily but especially today as we celebrate Grandparents during Catholic Schools Week.
‘This annual event highlights the purpose of Grandparents – honouring them, appreciating how they strengthen family ties, and remind our pupils of the wisdom and perspective older generations bring. Today was also the opportunity for our pupils to show appreciation to their grandparents who play an active role in their daily lives, whether by helping with homework, sharing family stories, or cheering from the sidelines at their sporting events.’
