Derry City and Strabane District Council service update  - Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Thw weather is continuing to impact Derry City and Strabane District Council services.

Derry City and Strabane District Council has advised that ongoing snow and icy conditions continue to impact some services across the district.

While conditions remain challenging in some areas, Council staff are working to maintain essential services where it is safe to do so.

The Council thanked the public for their "continued patience and understanding" and asked people to note the following updates:

Household Bin Collections

Bin crews are out and working today (Tuesday) and collections are taking place where road and weather conditions allow.

There will be delays, and some locations may still be inaccessible due to icy conditions. Where bins have been missed earlier this week or today, the Council will endeavour to return and collect them as soon as it is safe to do so.

Cemeteries

All Council cemeteries remain closed this morning (Tuesday) and will reopen only when conditions are safe. Burials will continue to be prioritised.

Some recycling centres may experience delayed opening this morning due to weather conditions. Services will resume when it is safe to do so. The public is asked to remain patient.

Community Centres

Some community centres may be closed today due to the weather. Users are advised to contact their local centre directly for the latest information.

Parks, playgrounds and open spaces

The public is advised to exercise extreme caution when using parks and open spaces and to remain alert to weather conditions, particularly when travelling.

Grass pitches and outdoor sports facilities

These facilities remain closed due to current weather conditions, and user groups are being contacted directly.

City of Derry Airport

Passengers using the City of Derry Airport are urged to keep in contact with their airline directly, allow extra time for travel and check live flight information at www.cityofderryairport.com.

A Council spokesperson said: “The health and safety of our staff and the public remains our top priority.

"Our crews are out and working today where conditions allow, however some disruption is unavoidable due to the ongoing weather. We thank the public for their patience and understanding as we continue to monitor conditions and restore services as safely and quickly as possible.”
