Derry man who allegedly threatened to cut up a woman remanded in custody

Patrick Gérard Mongan (21) of Labre Park in Derry appeared charged with breaching his bail on December 29 by being in the company of the alleged injured party in the case

Suspended sentence for Donegal man at Derry Magistrate's Court

The man appeared before Derry Magistrates' Court

A man who allegedly said he was going to cut up a woman and who is facing charges of non-fatal strangulation and threats to release sexual images against the same woman has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates' Court.
Patrick Gérard Mongan (21) of Labre Park in Derry appeared charged with breaching his bail on December 29 by being in the company of the alleged injured party in the case.
A police officer connected the accused to the charge and opposed bail.
He told the court that he had received information the defendant was in the company of the woman and went to an address.
Mongan was there and denied that the woman was present but the officer found her hiding under a duvet.
Bail was opposed as the defendant has a criminal history  in England and Scotland.
The officer said that they believed Mongan was pressurising the woman to withdraw her statement.
Previously the court had been told that Mongan had allegedly said when he completed his sentence he was 'going to cut the face off' the woman.
The court heard that the woman had been co-operating with police for more than a year but had recently withdrawn her statement.
The officer also opposed bail as he believed Mongan had 'a propensity for violence'.
Defence counsel Adam Laird said that Mongan had not contacted the woman she had 'landed' at his address.
He said he could be released on bail with a warning that this was his 'absolute final chance'.
Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop said that interference with witnesses was 'very serious' and went to the heart of this case.
He refused bail and Mongan was remanded in custody to appear again on January 9.
