Derry man returned for trial on charges of possessing offensive weapon and assaulting police

A man has been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on a charge of possessing an offensive weapon in public.

Michael McTaggart (50) of Rockmills in Derry appeared at a Preliminary Enquiry at the local Magistrate's Court today. 

He is charged with possessing an offensive weapon namely a screwdriver on August 3 this year.

He is also charged with assaulting a police officer on the same date. 

It was accepted that there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions. 

McTaggart said he did not wish to call any witnesses or make any statement at this stage. 

He was returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on January 6 and released on bail.
