Derry Magistrate's Court
A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with assaulting police.
Paul O'Kane (33) of Mountfield Road in Claudy was charged with the offences that occurred on August 18 this year after police responded to a report of a man having been assaulted.
When they arrived, police found O'Kane and his mother and O'Kane was said to be agitated.
Police arrested him and he repeatedly refused to wear a seatbelt while in the back seat of the police car, necessitating officers to sit with him after giving him several warnings.
O'Kane eventually had to be handcuffed and attempted to bite and headbutt the officers.
He later admitted that this was 'out of character' for him.
Defence Barrister Michael Donaghy said that O'Kane's offending in the past had been 'linked to alcohol', adding that this was only a technical assault and that his last conviction was in January last year.
He also said that O'Kane was 'disgusted with himself' and apologised for his 'disgraceful behavior'.
He was given a combination order of 18 months probation and 80 hours community service.
