Widespread condemnation has followed the stabbing of a police officer who required stitches to his leg while responding to a call in the Collon Lane area of the city in the early hours of Thursday, November 27.

In total, three additional police officers and one custody detention officer were also assaulted.

Two suspects have been arrested on suspicion of a number of serious offences, including attempted murder, and remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Alderman Keith Kerrigan, Chair of Derry and Strabane PCSP, said: "This violent attack on our police officers is completely unacceptable and deserves the strongest condemnation. These officers were simply doing their duty, working to keep our community safe, and were met with shocking levels of violence.

"Our thoughts are with the injured officers and their families during this difficult time, and we give them our full support. No one should face such violence while carrying out their professional duties.

“This incident highlights the reality of what our police officers face on a daily basis and reinforces the importance of the Police Federation's 'Let Them Protect' campaign. We must all work together as a community to support our officers and condemn those who perpetrate such violence.

“We urge the courts to impose the strongest possible sentences on those responsible for these attacks. Our officers deserve to work in safety, and those who assault them must face the full consequences of their actions.”

Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill said: “The stabbing and attempted murder of police officers in Derry is completely and utterly reprehensible.

“This appalling act in no way reflects the people of Derry.

“I want to extend my best wishes to both officers as they recover, and to their families and colleagues, who will be deeply affected by this incident.”

Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said the “vicious attack could have had horrific consequences”.

He said: “Police officers and other emergency service personnel understand that they will face difficult and dangerous circumstances but no-one should have to worry about being stabbed in the discharge of their duties.

“The level of assaults on emergency service staff is unacceptable and it should be taken seriously by ministers.”

DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton said he was “shocked and appalled” by the incident.

He said “I have spoken directly to the chief superintendent to convey my full support for the injured officer, who I understand required hospital treatment for a stab wound to the leg.

“My thoughts are also with the other officers and staff who were assaulted during this serious incident.

“Attacks on our emergency services are completely unacceptable.

“Officers go out every day to keep our community safe and they should be able to do so without fear of violence.”

The PCSP urges anyone with information about this incident to contact police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
