Derry Court
A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with criminal damage and disorderly behavior.
Andrew McManus (27) of Rock Mills in Derry was charged with the offences that occurred on September 8 this year at Clipper Quay cafe when police responded to reports of a man who was drunk and shouting and swearing outside the building.
McManus had been inside the building and had to be escorted out before staff locked the doors.
He was reported to be asking 'do you know who I am?' and glass in the door was seen to have been broken.
He was put inside a police vehicle which he proceeded to spit in, leading to a second charge of criminal damage.
When questioned by police, McManus showed 'genuine remorse' and embarrassment at the incident, apologising to both police and the restaurant.
Defence Barrister Stephen Mooney told the court that, in response to the 'obnoxious question', the staff in the restaurant knew who McManus was and that was why he was refused entry.
He added that McManus had 'long periods' without offending and that his last similar offence was in April 2022.
Deputy District Judge Sean O'Hare said that there was 'no explanation' for McManus's behavior, sentencing him to 200 hours of community service and ordering him to pay a fine of £250.
