A man who was extradited to the North after serving four years in prison in the South has been refused bail at Derry Magistrate's Court

John Paul Barrett (42) with an address at Northland Road in Derry had been remanded in custody after being extradited last Saturday.

He is charged with two burglaries, two criminal damages, affray and attempted grievous bodily harm with intent on September 14, 15 and 16 2021.

A police officer objected to bail on the grounds there was a risk of reoffending as Barrett has 200 previous convictions in the Republuc.

The court heard that he had failed to return to prison after being granted compassionate bail in December 2021.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that his client was 'anxious' to get these matters dealt with having spent so long in custody.

He said his client had 'panicked' after being released on compassionate bail in December 2021 and had gone on the run.

The solicitor said that he eventually spent 4 years in custody and added that these offences would take sometime to be dealt with.

Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop refused bail and Barrett will appear again on December 11.
