Derry Magistrate's Court
A Derry man who court heard had 'turned his life around' has been fined at the local Magistrate's Court for disorderly and criminal damage charges that occurred just hours after he was released from police custody.
Stephen Archer (30) of no fixed abode admitted two charges that occurred on September 3 this year.
The court heard that Archer was released on police bail on September 3 and a few hours later police were called to Lisnagaevin Shopping Centre to a report of a man 'causing a nuisance'.
Police found Archer who was 'unsteady on his feet' and abusive.
Officers offered Archer a lift home but he continued to shout and swear in the foyer of the centre.
When Archer was placed in the rear of a police vehicle he spat twice causing damage.
A defence solicitor said his client had just been released from custody but had 'unresolved alcohol issues'.
He described the offending as 'nuisance behaviour' and said Archer was now working and had settled.
Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop said it was 'disgraceful behaviour' and the defendant should know better.
He fined him a total of £750.
