Tributes and condolences are being paid following the passing of Professor Fabian Monds CBE.
A figure of immense influence in both academic circles and public life, and beloved family man, Professor Monds passed away peacefully at his Derry home on Thursday (November 13), after a long illness. He was 85.
A devoted family man, Professor Monds was the beloved husband of Eileen, loving father of Aisling and Niamh, devoted grandfather of Aodhgan, Bridie, Aran, Catlin and Ryan, dear son of the late James and Bridget, cherished brother of Noel and the late Sean, Pearl and Junior and a loving uncle to all his nephews and nieces.
Professor Monds, formerly of East View Terrace, Omagh, was a revered figure across Northern Ireland for his significant contributions to academia, telecommunications, and public service. He served with distinction as Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ulster and as Chairman of Invest Northern Ireland.
Ulster University and business leaders have expressed their profound sadness following the passing of Professor Monds, highlighting his leadership and contributions to public life and economic development.
"The University community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former colleague, Professor Fabian Monds CBE," Ulster University stated.
"Professor Monds led a distinguished academic career in the discipline of Information Systems, his research interests were wide ranging encompassing telecommunications and entrepreneurship.
"As Dean of the Institute of Mathematics and later, Pro-Vice Chancellor, of the Derry campus of Ulster University, he pioneered strong academic-industry partnerships promoting economic development at regional and international levels, through his role as Chair of Invest NI.
"His significant contribution to public life continued through his work as Chair of Northern Ireland Centre of Trauma and Transformation and BBC Governor with responsibility for Northern Ireland.
"We will remember Prof Monds with great fondness."
Local business leaders echoed the University’s sentiments, highlighting his wisdom and impact.
Stephen Kelly, Chief Executive of Manufacturing Northern Ireland, said: "Terribly sad news about Fabian’s passing. An incredibly wise and sometimes playful man, huge intellect and heart.
"A real champion for the NW. I learnt so much from him particularly when working with him when he was Governor of the BBC in NI."
Anthony Hutton, co-founder of Subterranean Software, described Professor Monds as an 'academic mover and shaker' and a 'strong force in the development of Magee College, University of Ulster,' particularly noting his role in developing the MSc Computing and Design programme.
Funeral leaving his home, 7 Oak Country Green, Crescent Link, on Monday, November 17 at 9.20am to St. Columba’s Church, Long Tower for Requiem Mass at 10.00am.
Interment afterwards in Ballyoan Cemetery. Family Flowers Only.
