Derry’s iconic ‘A Stitch in Time’ art installation has experienced “progressive and significant deterioration”.

A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council told The Derry News, it was “aware of the issues” regarding the sign.

The spokesperson said the illuminated piece, which sits on top of the former Rosemount shirt factory in the city, had experienced “ongoing failures within the lighting system”.

“Interim repairs have been carried out to maintain the installation. However, inspections have indicated that the piece has experienced progressive and significant deterioration over time,” they added.

“Council is undertaking further investigation to determine the best course of action to resolve the issue and a report will be submitted to Council once this work is complete.”

Clare Moore, a member of Friends of the Factories, the community network which honours “shirt factory workers and their legacy, connecting ex-workers and those interested in local history”, said she loved the ‘A Stitch in Time’ sign.

“I, like everyone else, love that sign. Lit up at night it can be seen from every part of the city,” said Ms Moore.

“The Rosemount shirt factory is one of our iconic buildings still in its original state. There is so much history contained there. The ‘A Stitch in Time’ sign should be maintained without question or debate.”

Derry City and Strabane District councillor Shaun Harkin (People Before Profit) said he had been contacted several months ago by Rosemount residents about the ‘A Stitch in Time’ dilapidation.

“Some of the bulbs in the installation appeared not to be working,” he added.

“Council does not own the former shirt factory but it is responsible for the installation. I notified a Council officer who agreed to have the bulbs checked and replaced.

“It is now the case that all the lighting in the installation is off. I have been informed by a Council officer that further investigation has established that more in-depth work, involving replacing electrical wiring, will be required.

“Council officers will bring forward a paper soon for consideration in the Guildhall Chamber documenting the issues that need to be addressed and the probable cost.

“The Rosemount Factory is a cherished building for people across the city and beyond.

“The "A Stitch in Time" installation, initially a temporary fixture, is considered by many to be a positive enhancement to the factory's iconic status that should be properly upkept and protected."
